NEWS RELEASE

ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE

This past long weekend, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) within the Central Region saw a significant increase in the number of motor vehicles travelling upon our roadways as the summer holiday season officially got underway.

The OPP wishes to remind the public that posted speed limits and their enforcement is something that the OPP takes very seriously and motorists can expect to see a marked police presence on OPP patrolled roads.

"We want to see that everyone makes it safely to their destination without putting the lives of their passengers and other motorists at risk," says Inspector Veronica Eaton, unit commander Central Region Traffic and Marine.

"This past weekend, our officers encountered a number of motorists who were travelling in excess of the posted speed limit and in one particular case, the driver was trying to get their child to camp. This motorist was observed travelling at a speed that at one point reached twice the posted speed limit in the Minden Hills area. The California driver, who was driving another family member's car, has since had his driver's license suspended and the car has also been impounded; this is not the way to start any vacation," says Inspector Eaton.

The OPP want to ensure that all roadways, trails and waterways are safe this summer season and remind the public that road, water and trail safety is a shared responsibility.
