Provincial police say three people are now in custody, but are releasing few other details related to a heavy police presence in an Alliston neighbourhood today.
Nottawasaga OPP remained on scene in the Kidd Crescent and John W. Taylor Avenue area for several hours on Feb. 27, due to an ongoing investigation.
Police say the incident began when officers attempted to pull over a vehicle around 3 a.m. The driver failed to stop and fled from police.
In the interest of public safety, police say officers did not pursue the vehicle. However, they were able to locate it a short time later.
As a result, three people were taken into custody and a stolen vehicle was recovered.
“Investigators do not consider this to be a random incident,” Sgt. Terri-Ann Pencarinha said in a news release. “Local residents will continue to see an increased police presence in the area. The OPP reminds all members of the public to be aware of their surroundings and personal safety at all times and to call the police to report any suspicious activity.”
More information will be communicated as it becomes available. However, the incident had not been resolved as of noon today, and the detachment’s major crime unit considers the investigation to be ongoing, police confirm.
This morning, the Simcoe County District School Board noted in a social-media post that the day would proceed as normal at nearby Boyne River Public School and Upper Canada Child Care.
“Nottawasaga OPP are investigating a situation in the community; however, they have confirmed that it is safe for the school day to proceed as scheduled,” the board said.
OPP were also called to Kidd Crescent for a shooting on Thursday, Feb. 22 that left one person in stable condition, according to police at the time. Police said the victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries after a shooting involving three male suspects who were wearing dark clothing and masks. They were last seen leaving the area in a white Toyota Camry.
It's unclear whether today's police presence and the shooting investigation are linked.
