A Monday morning basement fire at a Barrie house resulted in no injuries, but two cats are missing.

City firefighters were called to the Jones Drive house just after 10 a.m.

“There was one person home at the time that called it in, that there was smoke in their home, and they were able to self-evacuate,” said Deputy Fire Chief Eric MacFadden.

He said Barrie Fire and Emergency Service crews were able to get a dog, cat and a snake out, but two cats were unaccounted for at about 2 p.m., Monday.

The cause of the fire is not known and there is no damage estimate.

“Our crews … they located a fire in the basement, but the fire had intensified quite a bit so we had to do quite a bit of tactics to bring the fire under control,” MacFadden said.

He said the fire department’s investigative team will be on-scene once the area can be safely accessed.

Jones Drive is located north of Steel Street, off Arthur Avenue.
