The South Simcoe Police Communications Centre received several calls on Sunday, July 16, around 2:30 a.m., from concerned citizens reporting two Ford Focus' that were driving dangerously on Yonge Street in East Gwillimbry.

The two vehicles continued driving aggressively in Bradford West Gwillimbury and were pulled over by South Division officers on Holland Street West.

After speaking with witnesses, officers were satisfied that the two vehicles had engaged in an illegal street race.

A 39-year-old Bradford West Gwillimbury man and a 20-year-old Beeton man are facing charges of stunt driving and will be appearing in court on Sept. 13. They both have had their licence suspended for seven days and their vehicles have been impounded.

According to provincial legislation, drivers involved in street racing, stunt driving, or other aggressive behaviours on the road can face tough sanctions, including an immediate seven-day license suspension and vehicle impoundment. If someone is convicted, the fines range from $2,000 to $10,000.

For a first conviction, a driver can lose six demerit points, face a maximum license suspension of two years, and spend up to six months in jail.

South Simcoe Police would like to thank the witnesses who called to report this dangerous occurrence. Road safety is a shared responsibility. Dangerous driving and suspected impaired driving can be reported to police by calling 9-1-1. Safe Roads...Your Call!
