Provincial police have charged a woman with arson following a fire at a homeless encampment in Alliston on Monday.

Emergency crews responded to the scene, near Young Street, around 7:30 p.m. on June 17.

"A dispute between multiple individuals resulted in a tent being set on fire and destroyed. No injuries have been reported," Nottawasaga OPP said in a news released on Wednesday.

New Tecumseth firefighters attended the scene and safely extinguished the blaze.

Rebecca Rogers, 32, of New Tecumseth was arrested and charged with arson - damage to property. The accused has been held for a bail hearing.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Police also say the encampment was safely removed from private property, beginning on Tuesday.

"The decision to dismantle the encampment follows thorough assessments and consultations with local outreach teams, social service providers and public health experts," OPP said in the release.

"Comprehensive support services and networks were made available including temporary shelter options, mental health counselling, substance abuse treatment referrals, and access to health-care facilities," police say.
