The following letter is in response to an article about thefts from a convenience store, published Oct. 22.

I just read with interest the posting regarding the “habitual offender.” Since Oct. 10, the offender has been charged with theft from a convenience store at Anne Street North and Dunlop Street North six times.

A few hours after the last arrest and release, he was once again arrested for theft of alcohol and food from the same store.

This makes me wonder how our legal system works and how the general public can feel safe on the streets of Barrie or when they are entering a store, especially a convenience store.

I, for one, never go downtown anymore by myself and never go into corner stores after dark.

I have lived in Barrie since 1967 and am saddened by the fact that I no longer feel safe here.

Even when I go to the mall or a grocery store, I park as close to the store or entrance as possible. I have been approached on too many occasions by people asking for money, cigarettes, etc.

Anyone have suggestions on how things can be improved?
