Police seize bogus bills at Old Navy

On Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2016 police received reports of two suspects that had passed US counterfeit currency at Old Navy located at 468 Bayfield Street, in the City of Barrie.

A man and a woman had been shopping at Old Navy on Tuesday just after 1:15 p.m. They had each made a small purchase using US counterfeit $50 bills. Upon realizing the currency was counterfeit store management contacted police.

The counterfeit bills were seized by police. The investigation is ongoing.

The suspects are described as:

Suspect # 1

  • Male, white
  • Muscular build
  • Wearing a black “Blue Jays” baseball hat, white tank top and dark pants.

Suspect #2

  • Female, white
  • Thin build
  • Long curly hair – blond with dark roots
  • Wearing a black shirt, sweater and pants.

If you have US currency in your possession and are unsure of its authenticity, follow these steps to certify the real value of your money or contact police for assistance.

  1. Counterfeit money will often feel distinctly different from authentic money.
  2. Genuine money is often thinner than counterfeit money.
  3. Compare the bill with another legit bill of the same denomination.
  4. Inspect the printing quality.
  5. Examine the serial numbers; each bill will have a different serial number.
  6. Check the security features on the bill. The bills will be equipped with a security thread (plastic strip) that runs vertically and the bill will have watermarks.
