An arrest has been made in connection to a robbery at a Barrie convenience store Wednesday afternoon.

Shortly after 3 p.m. on Oct. 9, police received a report that the store, located in the plaza at the southwest corner of Bayfield Street and Sophia Street West, had been robbed and that an employee had been assaulted.

Once police arrived at the store, officers learned that a man had entered the store and then walked out shortly thereafter without paying for his item.

The store clerk reportedly followed the man in an effort to retrieve the stolen item, however the thief had met up with a second man nearby, police say.

The employee ended up being assaulted and was later taken to local hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Police say they were able to identify the suspect thanks to video surveillance from the store.

After searching downtown Barrie, officers located the accused shortly after 8 p.m. while responding to a separate incident.

The accused, a 28-year-old man of no fixed address, was arrested and taken to Barrie Police Headquarters for further investigation. He has been charged with robbery with theft and was held in custody awaiting a bail hearing, which was scheduled for today by video at the Barrie courthouse.
