A Barrie man has been charged with impaired driving after police say he crashed his vehicle into a storefront Friday morning.

City police responded to the Dunlop Street East business shortly before 2:30 a.m. on Oct. 18.

When officers arrived at the scene, they located the vehicle and noticed the convenience store had a broken window. The building has also sustained structural damage.

Police say the driver, a 34-year-old man, showed "obvious signs of impairment" and was arrested for impaired driving.

He was transported to Barrie Police Headquarters where a breathalyzer technician confirmed that he had almost three times in excess of the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

The man was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and impaired operation blood-alcohol concentration (80 plus). He was later released from custody.

The accused is scheduled to appear in Barrie court on Nov. 4.

The vehicle was also impounded for seven days and his driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days.
