Fire crews rescue worker stuck in Newmarket well

Ministry of Labour investigating incident following successful rescue

Central York Fire Services (CYFS) was called to a house in Newmarket on Monday after a man became trapped in a well.

Firefighters responded to a home on Belfry Drive on Oct. 7 at about 4 p.m. for a trench rescue.

“A worker performing repair work in a well encountered difficulty exiting while ascending,” according to the Ontario Ministry of Labour. “Emergency services responded, and the local fire department successfully assisted the worker.” 

No injuries have been reported.

Richmond Hill Fire and Emergency Services attended the scene, collaborating with CYFS to retrieve the man.

York Region Paramedic Services was also on the scene to assist.

A ministry inspector has been assigned to investigate the incident.

Fire officials said it handed the scene over to York Regional Police and informed the ministry of the incident.
