City police continue to seek four people in connection with a “vicious” assault in downtown Barrie early Monday.

The victim, a 58-year-old Barrie man, remains in serious condition in a Toronto-area trauma centre, police say.

Barrie police officers responded to 87 Dunlop St. E. for a report of a fight at 12:53 a.m. on July 17 involving a man, three males and a female.

“It was originally verbal and it escalated to a point where it became physical,” said Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon. “From what I understand, the victim fell to the ground and the assault continued while he was on the ground.

“It was vicious," he added.

No weapons were involved.

The assault took place near the Meridian Place stage, Leon said, close to one of the built-in seating areas.

Images from the incident, captured on video, were released by Barrie police Monday.

“We’ve been greatly assisted with information coming forward from the community,” Leon said. “We’re in the process now of trying to track down the individuals that are responsible.”

Anyone who can identify those responsible, or anyone who witnessed this incident, is asked to contact the Barrie Police Service by calling 705-725-7025, ext. 2601, for Sgt. William Pelan, or ext. 2627 for Det. Const. Jonathan Watt.
