A Wasaga Beach man has been arrested and charged in the aftermath of an alleged assault that left one person in critical condition and a subsequent search at the suspect's residence.
During the search, provincial police say officers seized a 9-mm Kal Tec foldable rifle with three 30-round magazines, a .22-calibre rifle, two .22-calibre folding rifles, a black pellet gun, shotgun ammunition, brass knuckles and an undisclosed amount of cocaine.
The investigation began on Feb. 25 when Huronia West OPP officers responded for an unconscious individual on Homewood Avenue, which is located near River Road East and Deerbrook Drive in Wasaga Beach.
The victim was in critical condition and airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre, according to police. An update on their medical condition was not released Thursday evening.
On March 6, members of the Huronia West OPP crime unit then executed a search warrant at the suspect's residence, with help from the community street crime unit, tactics and rescue unit (TRU) and the emergency response team (ERT).
David Zamida, 46, of Wasaga Beach, has been charged with aggravated assault, failure to comply with an undertaking, possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order, three counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm, careless storage of a firearm, possession of a weapon, prohibited device or ammunition, two counts of possession of a prohibited device or ammunition, and possession of a Schedule 1 substance (cocaine).
None of the allegations have been tested in court and Zamida is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
The accused was held for a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on March 8.
