City police have charged a man with numerous weapon offences following a call about a person armed with a knife Monday afternoon in downtown Barrie.

Police say the suspect was inside a vehicle that did not belong to him outside a home on Drury Lane.

"When three nearby construction workers saw him enter the car, they approached the owner who advised them that he had no business being in her car," police stated in a news release. "The workers kept the male in the car until police arrived and he was then safely taken into custody."

The call came in around 11:15 a.m. on Sept. 23.

A 45-year-old man, of no fixed address, has been charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, assault with a weapon (three counts) and failure to comply with a probation order.

The accused was held for a bail hearing and has since been remanded into custody. He's scheduled to appear in court Wednesday, by video, at the Barrie courthouse.

"Investigators with the Barrie Police Service believe that the actions undertaken by these workers likely prevented any additional criminal activity from taking place in this residential neighbourhood and prevented the now accused the opportunity to flee prior to police arrival," police stated in the release.
