A 36-year-old man faces multiple charges after a downtown Barrie break-and-enter call led to a standoff with city police on Monday morning.
On Nov. 4 at 5:52 a.m., police say officers responded to a report of a break-in at a Mary Street office building, located just south of Dunlop Street West.
When officers arrived, they were met by the building's superintendent, who led them to an empty unit that the man had just entered after allegedly breaking a rear window to the building.
Police said the suspect was located a short time later barricaded in an apartment unit in the same building. After utilizing several breaching tools, he was eventually taken into custody.
Police also learned the man, who is now in custody, had threatened the building superintendent and that a confrontation had taken place, which resulted in no injuries being sustained by the superintendent.
The accused was transported to police headquarters on Fairview Road where the investigation continued.
The arresting officers, assisted by detectives, confirmed the male in custody had failed to comply with five previous probation orders dating back to March 2023.
As a result of this investigation, police also confirmed the accused was responsible for a break-and-enter at the same building on Nov. 3 at approximately 5:30 a.m.
Police said this entry was captured on video surveillance and, at the time of the report, his identity was unknown.
The accused, of no fixed address, has been charged with two counts of break-and-enter of a place to commit an indictable offence, uttering threats of death or bodily harm, assault with a weapon and five counts of failing to comply with a probation order.
Police said the man has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear by video for a bail hearing with the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on Nov. 8.
